How They Covered It: Schenectady School board Meeting

Last night the big story on local Albany news channels was a Schenectady school board meeting. Each station covered it differently; last night at 11 I was watching NEWS10; however I have just watched CBS6 and FOX23's stories.

As you'll see by clicking the video players below, Marie Luby's report for WTEN was full of a lot of sound bites from concerned citizens, one part of the story that is undoubtedly necessary. However, she wraps up her report by saying "we didn't get a chance to speak with the superintendent." Is that so? How, then did FOX23 and CBS6 get a chance to speak to Ely.

CBS6's story had no reporter, and anchor Dori Marlin quickly read what some at the meeting had to say, not letting any of the citizens speak for themselves. Which is too bad because this was an essential part of the story.

Finally, FOX23 had Paul Merril report on the meeting and he did an excellent job. He had the citizen's voices as well as an interview with Ely.

It was interesting to see how differently FOX23, CBS6 and NEWS10 covered this story. But, does it mean that NEWS10 didn’t arrive at the meeting early enough to speak with Ely? How did FOX23 and CBS6 get to speak with him? [At this time, WNYT's video is not on their website.] Out of these 3 stories FOX23's was the best.
